Story of “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress”

The story begins in the walled Aragane Station, where the locals live in constant fear of cabanas, zombie-like creatures whose metal-coated hearts can be killed only by digging Cabanas spread their infection by telling, and transforming their victims into themselves. The protagonist, Ikoma, is a young engineer who invented a weapon called Tsuranukijutsu, capable of piercing Kabane’s heart. He is eager to test and prove that humanity can fight back.

Ikoma’s life changes dramatically when a heavily armed train infected with Cabane’s disease crashes at Aragane station. In the chaos that follows, Ikoma is beaten and forced to live in a cabana. However, by sheer willpower, he manages to suppress the infection and becomes a hybrid of a cabaneri and a human cabana. Alongside Mumei, the mysterious girl who also reveals herself to be Kabaneri, Ikoma and the other survivors escape in a steam train called Kotetsujo.

As Kotetsujo travels through Kabane-infested territories, the team faces a variety of challenges, from internal struggles among the survivors to the ever-present threat of the Kabane, they realize the Kabaneri have also been consumed by the dark mystery of the origin and true nature of the Kabane. The story delves into the moral and ethical dilemmas of the survivors, exploring the thin line between humanity and monster. Ikoma and Mumei struggle with their dual identities, battling not only external threats but also prejudice and fear of the people around them.

  • Ikoma: The main protagonist, Ikoma is an intelligent and determined young engineer who becomes a Kabaneri. Despite his transformation, he retains his humanity and fights to protect others.
  • Mumei: A skilled and enigmatic fighter, Mumei is also a Kabaneri. She possesses incredible agility and strength, and her past is shrouded in mystery.
